Getting Ready for Kindergarten
1) Complete a Pre-Kindergarten Physical:

  • Have your doctor/nurse practitioner sign authorization for the nurse to give asthma medication in school if needed
  • Work with your doctor/nurse practitioner to get an extra inhaler and spacer, or nebulizer medicine and tubing for school
  • Ask that your doctor/nurse practitioner complete an Asthma Action Plan for your child, and bring copy to school nurse

2) Does your child know how to:

  • identify early warning signs of an asthma episode and tell an adult
  • use a Peak Flow Meter (or beginning to learn)
  • use an inhaler with spacer (or beginning to learn)
  • identify things that make their asthma worse and how to avoid them

3) Contact the school before the first day:

  • Discuss your child’s asthma and emergency plan with the school nurse
  • Sign authorization for your child to receive medication in school
  • Bring the prescription labeled medication to the school nurse
  • Bring a copy of the Asthma Action Plan completed by the physician/nurse practitioner
