Steps to a HealthierMN - St. Paul is an initiative of the US Department of Health and Human Services which aims to help Americans live longer, better and healthier lives by reducing the burden of diabetes, overweight, obesity and asthma by addressing three related risk factors-- physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use.

Saint Paul Public Schools was selected to receive Steps funding from 2004 through 2009. The Steps initiative implements programming for students and staff and awards funding to schools in the district to help promote physical activity, nutrition, and education about asthma, diabetes and the dangers of tobacco use. Twenty schools from the Saint Paul School district have been selected to participate in the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. This Alliance is a joint partnership between the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association with the mission to “eliminate childhood obesity and inspire young people in the U.S. to develop lifelong, healthy habits.”

The Alliance will support SPPS efforts to promote and protect student health by providing training and resources to compliment District Wellness Policy implementation. These 20 schools will receive technical support from Student Health and Wellness and Steps to a HealthierMN - St. Paul.
